The way I stop my engine is as follows. I drive to the stopping position in first gear, pull in the clutch, then pull out the side stand with my foot, and let out the clutch (which will kill the engine, because of side stand safety switch). There will not be a back fire or pop. I then dismount and "remove the key". Removing the key is a very important step. If securing the cycle in a locked garage, replace the key. If need be to push the cycle, pull in the clutch lever.
